BRCA R5 TORCH – 4wd Qualifying Round 1

Another day of BRCA Championship racing, another day of blistering sunshine! 27 degrees at 10am tells you the type of day that was had at Torch for Round 5 of the 4wd Championship. Niel Cragg stitched up the 2wd title yesterday having held a season long advantage, but 4wd is a different story. The 4wd title battle is going all the way to the final round.
4wd Practice
The drivers started their day with two rounds of three minute practice session. Most of the cars looked reasonably well setup from the word go, but some still looked better than others. Michal Orlowski, Neil Cragg, Paul Crompton and Jamie Hall all putting in very fast laps in the low to mid 25 second bracket. We should see drivers at the sharp end securing 13 laps over the 5 minute qualifiers.

4wd Qualifying Round 1
The first drivers onto 12 laps was Yasir Mughal in heat 5. Yasir put in a good run with just a couple of mistakes and would remain provisional TQ for quite some time. With only 9 heats for 4wd, the seeded heats started with heat 7. Ben Pugh did just enough to displace Mughal to second overall so far on a 12/312.77.
In heat 8 the top times were shrunk again. Jamie Hall putting in a solid and nearly clear run on 12/305.64 with his closest competitor being Luke Holdsworth on a 12/311.03. With only 1 heat to go there is a big spread in the top five times so far – 14 seconds.
Heat 9 is the top heat, and by this stage run times were rapidly contracting. Michal Orlowski was on for a 13 lapper for a couple of small errors dropped him to 12/300.35 – still the fastest time we saw in round 1. Neil Cragg had similar pace but had some errors also, setting a 12/304.74 – second overall.
